Overview

Lumbini, located in Nepal’s Rupandehi district, is one of the world’s most revered Buddhist pilgrimage destinations and the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Buddha. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lumbini combines spirituality, history, archaeology and peaceful surroundings. The sacred complex includes the Maya Devi Temple, Ashoka Pillar, Sacred Garden, Puskarini Pond and monasteries representing Buddhist traditions from around the world.

How to Reach Lumbini

By Air: Fly from Kathmandu to Gautam Buddha International Airport, Bhairahawa, then travel approximately 22 km by road to Lumbini.

By Road: Lumbini is connected by road with Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan and Bhairahawa. From Bhairahawa, buses and taxis are available to Lumbini.

From India: Lumbini can also be reached by road via the Sunauli–Bhairahawa border, making it convenient for travellers combining Nepal with North India.

Best Time to Visit

October to March is generally the best period to visit Lumbini, with pleasant and comfortable weather for sightseeing, walking and exploring the monasteries. Winter is particularly recommended by Nepal Tourism Board.

March–May can also be attractive for pilgrims, especially around Buddha Jayanti, although temperatures become warmer
