A Brief History of Australia:
Australia has a history stretching back more than 60,000 years, with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples maintaining rich cultures, traditions and connections to the land.
European exploration increased from the 17th century, followed by British settlement beginning in 1788 with the establishment of a penal colony at Sydney Cove. During the 19th century, Australia developed through agriculture, trade, migration and the discovery of gold.
On 1 January 1901, the six British colonies united to form the Commonwealth of Australia. Canberra was later established as the national capital.
Today, Australia is a modern multicultural nation celebrated for its distinctive natural environment, indigenous heritage, vibrant cities and unique wildlife.
