History of Nepal: Nepal has a rich history shaped by ancient kingdoms, Hindu and Buddhist traditions, Himalayan trade, and the rise of the modern Nepalese state.
Ancient Era: Nepal's history dates back thousands of years. The Kathmandu Valley developed as an important centre of culture and trade, influenced by both Hinduism and Buddhism. Lumbini, in present-day Nepal, is traditionally recognized as the birthplace of Gautama Buddha.
Licchavi Period (c. 4th–8th century): This era saw major development in art, architecture, religion, trade and administration, particularly in the Kathmandu Valley.
Malla Period (c. 12th–18th century): The Kathmandu Valley flourished culturally. The three historic cities—Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur—developed magnificent palaces, temples, courtyards and traditional Newari architecture.
Unification of Nepal (18th century):
• King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha unified numerous smaller kingdoms and laid the foundation for modern Nepal.
• Rana Era (1846–1951): The Rana family controlled the government for more than a century while the Shah monarchy continued formally.
• Modern Nepal: Nepal became a constitutional monarchy and later transitioned into a federal democratic republic in 2008.
• Today: Nepal is known worldwide for its Himalayan heritage, diverse cultures, ancient temples, Buddhist sites and its iconic connection with Mount Everest.
