Sri Lanka – An Island of Timeless Heritage
Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon, is an island nation with a history spanning more than 2,500 years. Located in the Indian Ocean, it has been shaped by ancient kingdoms, Buddhism, maritime trade, colonial influence, and rich South Asian traditions.
The island's recorded history is closely associated with the ancient Sinhalese kingdoms, with Anuradhapura becoming one of the earliest great capitals around the 4th century BCE. Buddhism arrived in Sri Lanka during the 3rd century BCE and became deeply woven into the island's culture, architecture, art, and traditions.
Over the centuries, royal capitals shifted from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa, while remarkable monuments such as Sigiriya were created. Later, Kandy became the final major kingdom and remains one of Sri Lanka's most important cultural centres, particularly because of the sacred Temple of the Tooth Relic.
From the 16th century onward, Sri Lanka came under European colonial influence—first the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch, and finally the British. These periods left a distinctive architectural and cultural legacy, especially in coastal cities such as Galle.
Sri Lanka gained independence from Britain in 1948, marking the beginning of its modern era. Today, the country combines ancient heritage with tropical beaches, tea-covered mountains, wildlife, vibrant traditions, and welcoming cultural experiences.
